Val de caniculă intensă în România: temperaturile superioare și zonele cele mai impactate

Influence of the heatwave on health

Extreme heatwaves can have significant effects on human health, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic illnesses. High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and, in severe cases, heatstroke, which is considered a medical emergency. Symptoms of heatstroke include dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, and confusion, and without prompt treatment, it can be fatal. Moreover, excessive heat can worsen pre-existing conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. During heatwaves, it is crucial for individuals to stay properly hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and remain in cool areas to prevent negative health effects.

Regions most affected by high temperatures

In Romania, extreme heatwaves have a varying impact across different regions, depending on geographical and climatic factors. The southern and southeastern areas of the country are the most affected by high temperatures, with the counties of Teleorman, Giurgiu, Călărași, and Constanța frequently registering maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. These regions are characterized by a plain climate that favors heat accumulation and reduces air circulation, thereby amplifying the sensation of thermal discomfort.

Additionally, in the western part of the country, the counties of Timiș and Arad feel the heatwaves intensely, due to the influence of warm air masses coming from the southwestern part of Europe. In these areas, high temperatures are often accompanied by low humidity, increasing the risk of wildfires and impacting local agriculture.

In contrast, the mountainous and submontane regions, such as Brașov and Harghita counties, although not completely sheltered from temperature rises, enjoy a milder climate with more moderate thermal variations. However, even here, heatwaves can cause discomfort and affect local ecosystems.

Precautionary and protective measures

In the face of extreme heatwaves, adopting precautionary and protective measures is essential to minimize health risks and overall well-being. First, it is recommended that individuals stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, typically between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and utilize air conditioning or fans to maintain a comfortable temperature in their homes. If they lack such equipment, people are advised to spend time in cool public spaces like shopping centers or libraries.

Consistent hydration is crucial; water intake should be regular, even when not feeling thirsty, to prevent dehydration. It is advisable to avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to fluid loss. Additionally, wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing that allows the skin to breathe and doesn’t retain heat is recommended.

Diet also plays an important role in managing heat. It is suggested to consume light meals and avoid heavy or spicy foods that may cause thermal discomfort. Furthermore, special attention should be given to vulnerable groups, such as children, elderly people, and those with chronic conditions, ensuring they are well-hydrated and not exposed to excessive heat.

For those who must work or spend time outdoors, taking frequent breaks in the shade and avoiding intense physical exertion during peak heat times are essential. Application of high SPF sunscreen and wearing wide-brimmed hats are also recommended.

Weather forecast for the coming days

According to the weather forecast for the coming days, the extreme heatwave will continue to affect most regions of Romania, with temperatures remaining above the usual average for this time of year. Meteorologists warn that in the southern and southeastern parts of the country, maximum temperatures will reach and even exceed the threshold of 40 degrees Celsius, maintaining a high level of thermal discomfort. In these areas, nights will be tropical, with temperatures not dropping below 20 degrees Celsius, significantly hindering the body’s recovery from daytime heat.

In the western part of the country, slightly more moderate yet still high temperatures are expected, fluctuating between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius. In this region, drought conditions will intensify, with an increased risk of wildfires requiring additional preventive and intervention measures from local authorities.

The mountainous regions will experience milder temperatures, but even here, the thermal values will be higher than normal. Meteorologists predict that the wind will be light to moderate, without bringing significant cooling to the atmosphere. Furthermore, no significant precipitation is expected to assist in alleviating drought conditions.

It is important for the population to stay informed and follow the recommendations of authorities to cope with these extreme weather conditions. In the coming days, constant monitoring of weather forecasts will be essential to prevent negative impacts on health and daily activities.
